Quick fix for referral spam

Postby Katgirl » 2006-05-17 07:34 am

I've had a load of turkish chat sites adding my code to their pages and creating huge amounts of traffic on my server - 1GB in 2 days - which has brought my site down twice. I found this quick fix, using a .htaccess file in my topsites directory, containing the following code:

Code: Select all
SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ".*(sohbetturk|chatchut|sohbetchat|arkadascet|kalpyeri|sohpetsohpet).*" BadReferrer
order deny,allow
deny from env=BadReferrer

This stops them linking to my button and generating hits on my site. You could put it in your main directory if you prefer. Change the key words to whatever username a spammer joins up to your topsites with, and add any new ones that come along.

We have been having the same problem lately, so I have changed the topsites list to approval only before registering so they don't get a link on the site atleast. I think they will give up knowing they won't get a link, that is all they are after.

They want it so it pushes them up google or their googlerank increases or whatever.

Jeremy, I see other sites do the image or security code to join a site. Could that be implemented in your TopSite?

That may help deter some as well.

And Kat, thank you for that info. "added"

Yes, we do. That's the strange thing, I think they might do it manually, as once I get rid of it, it comes back a little bit later on. Strange... Now I have the approving system in place, it has stopped

it could be possible that they created a program to break the captcha. i'm looking into using a more secure captcha in 5.1.0.

if they do it manually, then i guess manual approval is the only thing to stop spam.

I have capcha enabled, I have manual approval enabled, I've emailed these people aftr signing up to tell them they're not welcome, they've still put the code on their site which displays my banner and takes my bandwidth. sohbetturk signed up AGAIN after I emailed saying I'd deleted him. Please do the fix I suggested asap - no code unless approved!

These are the sites (so far):

http://www.sohbetturk.com/ - 163194 hits
http://www.arkadascet.com/ - 119284
http://www.kalpyeri.org/ - 12354
http://www.chatchut.com/ - 54039
http://www.sohbetchat.tc/ - 14425

Take a look at sohbetturk's homepage! There are HUNDREDS of topsite buttons!

Sigh, spammers are always trying new ways to get visitors to their site/increasing pagerank. The reason the buttons are on his site is that if a button is viewed he remains an active member and doesn't get deleted. I think an member must be considered inactive if that person or some visitor hasn't clicked on the button within X amount of days.
