5.1.0 Beta Released

Postby Jeremy » 2006-05-24 11:53 pm

Aardvark Topsites PHP 5.1.0 Beta is here!

This is a BETA release. That means it has not been extensively tested. Be on the lookout for any bugs and please report them at the support forum.

There is NO UPGRADER in this release and NO TRANSLATIONS besides English. The upgrader and more translations will be present in the release candidate, which should be released in about a week.

You can get it at the downloads page: http://www.aardvarktopsitesphp.com/inde ... =downloads

Here is a list of changes since 5.0.3:

FEATURES
- When an edit form or join form has errors in it, the user is presented with inline error messages
- RSS feed of the top 10 sites (overall and by category) via feed.php
- New admin stuff:
- - Topical links to the manual for confusing options on the settings page
- - Google-friendly links is now an option
- - Option to email admin when a new review is posted
- - Custom pages: easily add static content to integrate with your topsites (FAQ, rules, etc.)
- - Profanity filter
- - Overall stats displayed on main page
BUG FIXES
- More robust in non-standard environments (no <?=, handles weird files in languages dir)
- Major performance increase in rankings.php for lists with lots of sites per page
- Hits in from search engines are filtered to prevent cheating
- Language list is ordered alphabetically
- Minor skin tweaks
- When a category name is edited, sites currently in that category are moved to the edited category
- Categories containing ampersands (&) work correctly
- Admin does not allow you to delete the last category
- Minor search improvements (UI and sorting)
- When users join lists that require admin approval, they are warned that they will not be listed immediately
- Uses preg_replace_callback() instead of preg_replace() to speed up skin parsing
- - 10% faster skin parsing results in 1% faster overall script execution

Question about google friendly links:

Postby calgil » 2006-05-25 12:37 am

Does that mean that Google friendly links is not an option for 5.0.3 ???

Are google friendly links on by default in 5.0.3 or do you have to manually turn on google friendly links in 5.0.3, and if so how?

Thanks - I tried to search around to find this answer, but I could not.

google friendly links is on by default in 5.0.3, and there is no option in the admin to turn it off. a decent amount of people don't like it though, so i added an option to turn it off.

Just wonderin'

...why wouldn't someone like them? I get the part about the hits being a little less accurate, but it that means better rankings. Thanks for the quick answer, btw!

every .php file was changed (except settings_sql.php) due to a new security measure.

as for the skins, the classic skin hasn't been updated to take advantage of the new features and it might not work entirely correctly. in fusion, the following files were changed:
join_captcha.html
join_form.html
join_finish.html
edit_form.html
link_code.html
admin.html
search_results.html
wrapper.html - rss stuff only (one line)
screen.css - the last 7 lines are new

the join and edit forms were changed to allow inline error messages. the search results was changed to make it look and function better. the admin was changed because of the new functions added.

to port a 5.0.x skin to 5.1.0, just copy the small changes in wrapper.html and screen.css. the other files are probably not modded too much in other skins, so you can just overwrite your old ones with the new ones.

if something still doesn't work right in your custom skin, then i probably edited a skin file without writing it down. if that happens, please let me know because this information will be in the official upgrade instructions later.

Do you still use that mailing list you setup Jeremy?

I'm only askign because I didn't receive any emails about all the latest happenings (I have never received an email from that mailing list actually). I for one would love to be informed about things such as this. So I imagine if the other people that joined that mailing list are anything like myself and only periodically stop by here, I'm sure they'd love to hear from you about the latest updates as well.

i'm going to use the mailing list for the official release. the beta doesn't really have wide appeal.

5.1.0 final will probably be released within a couple weeks.

Jeremy, as always you have done an excellent job on this.

1 question, is it possible in the future to allow PHP in the custom pages created from admin? Not sure what kind of security implications this may cause but it would be a great feature.

anyway for the wrapper, if anybody wants.

i would be inclined against that because then if someone hijacks the admin session or steals the password, they can do whatever they want.

I'll wait for the release candidate. Could you please update the admin demo. It hasn't been updated in since 4.1.0
