I found a problem on Aardvark Topsites and this is also a SPAM threat.

The rating form could be easily cheated by some script and go to a higher rankings that will reach rank one.

So if you could create a counter measure like requiring the visitor to enter the captcha code to rate the member or else the visitor cannot rank the member.

What spammers are searching for

Postby ladysham » 2007-02-07 11:30 pm

Like everyone else here, I have my share of spammers. Mine is a very niche top sites and only has about 100 members at this time, so the server load from spammers has not affected me yet. However, I am concerned.

I went through the keyword phrases people have used in the past week to find my top sites. Here are the ones that I feel are being used by spammers.

aardvark topsites php index.php?a=join
"powered by aardvark"
by aardvark topsites php 5.1.2
aardvark topsites php index-php "a join "
top sites ranking join user

Since four of them are searching for something related to Aardvark topsites, I am going to replace the text link with a graphic that says the same thing. We'll see how it goes.

We better not taunt them yet! A few of us may now be safe, but as an overall group of site owners, we are still not protected yet. A good solution for ALL of us, however, may finally be possible SOON! Keep your fingers and toes crossed... :D

wow, I get about 20 of these fuc@#$s joining up every day! Can't wait for the new version. I approve everyone manually, best would be to have everyone banned until approved...sigh!

Hi, why don't you use a code with letters or so that automatic scripts can't register like it is required to sign a account in this forum here?

@Basti: Ah, i see, but maybe it can be added to the next version, too, because all automatic scripts can't get through this and the real people loose more time by typing the codes - so they can't register so often in hundreds of lists a day.

I'd keep it simple...Ideally, everyone who joins should be banned. They can still place the code on their site, but nothing will be displayed. Only once they're approved, their ban is lifted and they would get ranked

I get so many spammers that I have to approve everyone anyways. Now I started getting spam reviews, so now those have to be approved too..sigh.

Any ideas when the new version is coming out?.

hehe... I already said that few posts up OOPS! Doublepost :)

I really think the best solution is to do as another topsite does and that is... the site has to be approved before they can get the button code. Seems simple enough to me.
