A Solution to Topsites Spam?

Now I started getting spam reviews, so now those have to be approved too..sigh.

That is a VERY important point you have brought up!

If anybody does NOT have their list set to require approval by admin BEFORE reviews go live, you NEED to change that setting or you're letting Spam go online!

Jeremy does have the default set so HTML links do NOT work in reviews. But, sadly, that is still NOT stopping the spammers!

Even if links in reviews can't be clicked to go anywhere, those URLs are being spidered and that helps them (to a small degree).

PLEASE change your setting if you do NOT require your approval first! It may also be worth your time to go back and check past reviews. This is a fairly recent problem that has come up, so anything before 2007 is probably fine. I'm afraid this will get WORSE if we ignore it.

We MUST remove ALL incentives for Spammers if we can!

Any ideas when the new version is coming out?

May I recommend generating a special question in which users must answer in order to register as to prevent bots? I've done something similar with http://www.gamexe.net/topsite/index.php?a=join. I plan on whiping up a quick script which will pick a random question and answer from the database to use for a session, and if the user doesn't answer the question correctly, the registration will not be accepted. And then, just to add to things, if the user fails to register after 3 attempts during a session, his IP will be banned.

Other confirmation methods could also be used to prevent bots from spamming such as having to identify the contents of a picture. (for example, a cat) Of course, the picture used would be randomly generated from a list in the database.

I'm just saying, there's many ways to prevent spam bots. As for users actually registering just to spam, well, there's nothing better to do than require approval of all comments, registrations, etc. I suppose requiring approval should be a default in installations; that would surely help in the war against spammers.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents. I think Aardvark Topsites is a great script, and I hope to watch it grow for years to come. =)

Maybe when I get a bit more spare time, I'll whip up a MODification so that users can add secret questions which will randomly be grabbed and used for reviews, registration, etc. It's a simple enough thing to do anyway, and I have a good idea of how to go about coding it. However, keep in mind that this would only help with the fight against BOTs. There is nothing more that we can do to prevent actual users from spamming than requiring aproval of everything that is posted on a topsite list.

But a correct answer is required to join right? This could help stop spamming humans if they do not speak good english or have much knowledge of a certain culture. Of course that may limit our membership more than we'd like depending on the topsite.

Or the questions could be mathematical, what many consider to be a universal language. Something as simple as "10+12=?" could easily be a question which a human could answer. And then, in order to prevent bots from catching on to the randomly generated questions (or calculating the equations), you could simply add a very large number and variety of questions for the script to chose from. It could include "What is the name of this topsite?", "The third letter of the english alphabet is _", "The letters C, A and T spell" etc. It's a simple enough concept, it's just setting how the script will identify the question in use and determine if it was answered corretly that's the slightly more difficult part. I'm guessing it can be done quite easily by assigning a cookie to the user which contains the id of the random question which is entered in the database. I'm gonna look into this topsite script a bit more, just to get a feel of how to go about making the admin pages and such, and to make sure that the sessions wouldn't somehow conflict with any others used by Aardvark Topsites PHP. (that is, if the topsite script uses sessions at all?) I suppose I'm gonna give writing this MOD a go if no one else is going to, and I'll be sure to release it to the public when I get it in a working state.

If they dont join your list they dont get the backlink... therefore its no benefit to them.

Adding a question is a very good idea. What if all users who visit the topsites answered the question in a gateway page of some sort? If they answered correctly, a cookie will be saved allowing the visitor to visit the topsites freely without having to answer another question. This will keep spam bots out of your topsites, but it also keeps google bots out of it as well. I'm not sure.

No really, I am sick of it too. I get 100-200 a DAY that register and I have to go throught the FLIPPIN list to see if one is a valid user wanting to join.

I havent posted for ages, but i just thought of an idea, i got this idea from a PTC sites, it will stop robots submitting sites, change the join button info, and the original one make hidden and send the requests to something like a banning page, so all the info that the robot fills is send to be banned rather than submitted.

So basically since robots requie to know the url, and the join button info they wont submit to the one that is showing, but they will submit to the hidden one, that sends them straight to be banned.
