Where do I look to change the colour of the outline around the topsites? Is it possible to add a graphic there instead?

I believe the outline color is in the screen.css file.

I looked but couldn't work out which bit, I'll do trial and error and see if I can find it

it's under #wrapper in screen.css.

instead of doing trial and error, i recommend using the firebug extension for firefox. then you can just click on "inspect", hover over the element in question, and it will show you the css governing it.
