I have managed to set up a topsite using the arddvark php script and a free hosting account which is actually quite easy. Shame I didnt realise this before going to all the trouble of setting up itopsites and advertising it around the net for it to just vanish.

There is a list of all the free hosting services at the address below, just find one that allows php
http://www.free-webhosts.com/webhosting-01.php

(a little word of warning, dont use awardspace. I have tried and tested freehostia and they seem ok so far)

then download the top site script from arddvark at
http://www.aardvarktopsitesphp.com/

and follow the instructions its actually really simple. Hope this helps someone else.

how is a free host going to handle the cpu load from the button.php?

Mine's gone, too. I can log in to the control panel and manage it, but actually attempting to go to the URL of the topsite takes me to a GoDaddy page.

First all the downtime, and now this. What the heck is going on?

You'd better consider that before getting sites to join. It's a pain to try to get them to switch out the codes after they have dead links when your free account goes down.

I'm proud to say that I have acquired iTopsites and it will be back up as soon as I get it migrated to the new server. Hopefully Monday, but likely Tuesday.

The new support forum can be found here http://www.osempire.com/community/forum ... .php?f=117

for the record, from my experience a free host is likely not going to be a viable solution for a topsite.

Good deal Mark!!
Will the database be back or will we all have to start over again?

No data will be lost and all topsites will be back as soon as the DNS propagates. :)

That is fantastic news however Jeremy has said he isnt sure that it is viable to have a free remotely hosted topsites service. How do we know that it will be worth the effort of promoting our topsites again. IF you can make it work Mark then believe me I am extremely greatful.

As for the free hosting service it was just a suggestion for people to try I did say I hadnt fully tested it.

good point :) I can tell you that I have made a large enough investment into this that I will do whatever it takes to ensure the ongoing success of itopsites.

I have a long history of success in the web hosting industry and aardvark topsites, so I feel right at home with iTopsites. I can assure you with 100% confidence that iTopsites is not going anywhere.

What appeared to be DOS attacks on the server is actually just the result of Sohbet causing too many network connections, I have a fix planned for this so I expect smooth sailing once we get the DNS updated to point to the new server.

I have a suggestion for you Mark from out here in the internet zone.
How about an option to pay to have my hosted site advertisemant free?
I would be willing to pay a monthly fee to have them ugly banners removed and help support the service.
Just tossing that out there.
