Hi Jeremy,

a curiosity question about new topsite release used on your toptopsites.com

Probably is wrong ... but have you implemented a caching system for ranking page ??

It seems loading so fast ...

If no ... what do you think about this ??

Bye.

no, i haven't. it's might seem fast because it's running on an under-utilized server at the moment.

a very old version actually did implement caching. itopsites, which is a modified version of aardvark topsites, uses caching to speed things up.

i have been thinking about putting it in a later version, but the cpu power to generate the ranking pages pales in comparison to the load created by button.php.

So true Jeremy.. but what solution is there?
I can think of none for button.php

Except maybe allow people to use multiple files..

Such as a button1.php, button2.php, button3.php, etc..

To lighten the load of a single file? Maybe you could code it so when handing the code out, it will figure which one has less load or users using it at the moment and give that file in the link?

Someone who I know took a look at the button.php and said there were too many calls for the mysql or w/e... like saying you really only needed one process or call to the mysql rather then several.. and that you could clean up the button.php file alot. But then again that person doesn't know what all the file needed to do either.. because he never used this script.. xD

if someone can speed up button.php i would be grateful. right now it uses:
1 query to check if it is a valid member
1 query to check if it's a unique hit
1 query to update the ip log (to count the unique hit)
1 query to update the stats
1 query to get the cached rank

if the rank needs to be updated, then it is 2 more queries to update the rank.

if someone wants to take a look at it, the code (like all other code) is in svn: http://svn.berlios.de/wsvn/atsphp/trunk ... rev=0&sc=0

Really? Well it shouldn't be, and I don't want my visitors to find that site, so I'm going to remove my button. You can delete my account (IC)

koby, i believe he is referring to the fact that one of the topsites on toptopsites is a porn topsites.

ic... why wouldn't you want your visitors to find a porn site? i want all of my (of age) visitors to find porn sites, they're fun. guess you better get your site delisted from google as well.

I've a question for IC...

Did you really think that porno is not legal ??

Can you explain us where you have read about not legal ??

There's a special law in your country ??

You know what is internet ?? You think to live on Mars ??

Open your eyes and take a look around you ... is sufficient to watch TV to see more orrible thing ... like WAR !!!

So simple pornography is the last of problem... but is important to respect always the children !!

Ok ... here I'm, sorry for this puntualization.. let's talking about Topsite.

Jeremy if you want you can browse my topsite (sorry is only in Italian for now) to see my last modify.

I've used a funny Flash plug-in to visualize Charts !!

What do you think about ?

Another modify is in the Admin Panel...I try to describe it because you can't view:

There's a menu item that help me to find with a click the list of wich users are freezed ... I mean those sites inactive by a number of settable day. For each user present in the list I can send an Alert e-mail with info before their site reach the master inactive day limits. Is very usefull and in most case users patch their site and then return active !!

Let me know.

I just assumed it's legal from all the stuff I heard about it. I personally think porn should be illegal and I don't want my site members to visit porn sites, so I simply asked for my account to be deleted. I removed my link and that's that. It's not that big of a deal anyway.

P.S. Sorry about my post up there. I didn't realize there was a second page of posts when I replied so I hit the post reply button instead of the quote button. lol sorry.

I think you should actually take some time to create some main categories and place everyone under a category, instead of just having every site under one same category.
